How to Keep Doubt From Holding You Back

A few months ago, I offered a free 30-minute career coaching session on a whim to my Instagram followers. Your responses blew me away. More than 200 people signed up in the first 48 hours. 🤯

Since then, I’ve helped dozens of amazing professionals navigate career crossroads. I also published my free guide — The Just Quit! Toolkit — and more than 2,000 (🤯!!!!) people have downloaded it so far.

The feedback has been phenomenal (keep it coming!).

I used tips from your guide and just improved my yearly income by $20k/20% and 15k stock option shares when negotiating for a new job.  Thanks so much for putting it together and sharing! —Anonymous

I’ve talked to and read so many messages from men and women who are stressed out and burnt out, wondering whether they should stay or go and feeling trapped in jobs they no longer want or enjoy.

Over the last few weeks of career coaching sessions, I’ve noticed a common thread in the conversations I’ve had. It sounds a little different each time.

“I want to go for it but I don’t feel like…”

“I want to go for it but I don’t have…”

“I want to go for it but what if…”

“I want to go for it but how would I….”

“I want to go for it but I don’t know…”

Each of these phrases is just a mask hiding the same sneaky little monster who tends to creep up whenever it senses change is on the horizon.

Doubt.

Let’s just say I’ve become well acquainted with this devilish little thing called Doubt intimately.

In just a decade, I quit 7 times and 10x’d my net worth and my income at the same time. I went from a scrappy young finance reporter to senior director and later chief consumer advocate at a major U.S. bank. You don’t make huge career leaps like that and not get accustomed to going toe-to-toe with Doubt on a regular basis.

Time and again, conversation after conversation, I’ve seen how Doubt can cloud your vision and hold you back from taking the next step forward in your career.

I want to help you stop Doubt in its tracks.

Superman fears Kryptonite. Doubt fears Facts.

Doubt hates logic and reason. Anytime you feel Doubt creeping up on you, sit down and let the facts fight back. If you fear you’re not qualified for a certain role, pull up the job description and tick off each and every skill and duty on the list that you know you can handle. If you’ve got more than half the list ticked off, then you know this is just Doubt trying to play tricks on you again.

When Doubt tries to tell you that you probably can’t afford to quit and take a break in between jobs, sit down and crunch the numbers. How much would it cost you to maintain your lifestyle for six weeks while you take a mental health break and prepare for your next career change? The number may not be as scary as you think. In fact, you may already have it saved up in your bank account, just waiting for you to flip the emergency fund switch and finally let your hard-earned coins go to work for you.

Doubt is the voice telling you that your side hustle is just a hobby and not a business, despite the fact that you own your LLC and customers line up to pay for your services.

I hope these tips help you keep Doubt at bay for good.
